Abstract: 

he Department of Environment and Water Management of Chania Regional Unit of the Region of Crete (ex-Prefecture of Chania), is the competent authority for the environmental inspection at Chania district, according to the Greek and European Law. The paper is referring to the inspections conducted by the regional unit of Chania for the period 2012-2016, the difficulties/challenges that the Department mitigates, the procedure of the administrative penalties for environmental crimes and the following procedure to the judicial authorities.
