Abstract: 

The protected area of Axios Delta, designated as a Ramsar wetland since 1975 and still pending the adoption of the national legislation for its characterization as a National Park, is used as an example to illustrate the dangers for biodiversity due to delays and inadequacies in the establishment and management of Protected Areas in Greece.
