The 2-day National Conference entitled: “Environmental Liability, Prevention and Remediation: Challenges and opportunities for Biodiversity Protection in Greece” took place in Heraklion, September 8-10, 2017.

More than 125 delegates, academics, judges & prosecutors, officials and executives of the Regions and Decentralized Administrations of Greece, representatives of security forces, lawyers and lay public attended the conference. During the Conference, 31 oral presentations were announced, 12 posters were presented, while a Round Table was held on Saturday, September 9, 2017, where representatives of the Protected Areas Management Bodies of the country, the Greek Ombudsman, lawyers and academics met to discuss the future of the Management Bodies and the protection of the environment in general.

The main conclusions that emerged during the National Conference both from the announcements and from the discussion that followed in most lectures are that the main reasons for the ineffective prosecution of the environmental crimes are the lack of control, the beneficial provisions of some laws, the lack of environmental courts and specialized environmental public prosecutors, the degradation of the regional authorities for the implementation of the environmental liability in committees and not in autonomous departments, and the under-funding of the environmental crime’s prevention and suppression system.
