Greek Ombudsman’s intervention for the poisoned baits

On the occasion of a complaint, lodged by the environmental organizations, which concerned the mass poisoning of birds of prey in the Nestos’ Straits (February 2012), the Greek Ombudsman examined the report of failure of effective protection of wildlife from the illegal use of poisoned baits.

By aiming to a comprehensive solution to the problem, the Greek Ombudsman investigated the legal status that governs the use of poisoned baits in conjunction with that relating to the protection of wild fauna and sent written proposals to the relevant ministries, asking at the same time for the immediate treatment of the subject by taking appropriate measures.

The associated finding, which occupies 22 pages, was sent to the relevant ministers of Environment & Energy and Rural Development & Food in November 2016.

Besides to the historic references and the investigation conducted by the Ombudsman, proposals of the Independent Authority to address the problem on the part of the central administration of the country, were lodged.

The finding is posted in the following link: http://www.synigoros.gr/resources/docs/170124-porisma.pdf.
