Στις 29-30 Αυγούστου 2018 στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Γάνδης (Τμήμα Νομικής και Εγκληματολογίας) πραγματοποιήθηκε το 5ο Συνέδριο Περιβαλλοντικού Δικαίου μεταξύ Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης και Κίνας με θέμα "Πράσινη νομοθεσία, οικονομικά εργαλεία και περιβαλλοντικό έγκλημα".

Οι θεματικές του συνεδρίου περιελάμβαναν τη χρήση οικονομικών εργαλείων στην περιβαλλοντική νομοθεσία, την προστασία και διαχείριση των φυσικών πόρων καθώς και τη θεωρία και την πρακτική στην αντιμετώπιση των περιβαλλοντικών εγκλημάτων.

Στο συνέδριο συμμετείχε η Συντονίστρια του Παρατηρητηρίου Περιβαλλοντικού Δικαίου Δυτικής Κρήτης, κ. Μαρία Μανιαδάκη, η οποία παρουσίασε το πρόγραμμα LIFE NATURA THEMIS ενώπιον των συμμετεχόντων και συγκεκριμένα τη χρήση των ευρωπαϊκών επιδοτήσεων ως εργαλείων αποτροπής του περιβαλλοντικού εγκλήματος σε ομάδες- στόχους, αναφερόμενη στο ειδικότερο παράδειγμα της μείωσης των εμπρησμών από κτηνοτρόφους σε βοσκοτόπους στη Δυτική Κρήτη.
