Mr Georgios Sbokos, LIFE Natura Themis coordinator attended the two-day workshop on environmental prosecution of crimes regarding illegal waste dumping and atmospheric pollution on March 28 and 29, 2019 in Nicosia, Cyprus, invited by the European Network of Environmental Prosecutors (ENPE) and the ENPE LIFE Project. He presented the Case C-364/03 EUCJ, convicting Greece before the ECJ for not taking measures to reduce air pollution. He spoke about the lack of air pollution monitoring in Crete, the accident on the 22.03.19 at Linoperamata and the multi-polluting triangle formed by the industrial area, the airport and the power unit in Heraklion.
Further, cases of soil and atmosphere degradation were presented at the workshop, mainly due to industrial activities, as a result of excess of their administrative licensing. The thirty participant Prosecutors and Judges have submitted prosecution practices and experiences from the countries of Germany, England, Belgium, Sweden, Cyprus, Romania, etc.
