Τhe Heraklion Bar Association (HB) was founded in 1954 according to the Decree 3026 which was published in the Governmental Gazette 235/08.10.1954 and has being amended through Law 4194/2013. The HB’s internal matters are regulated according to an Operating Regulation which follows the administrative board’s Resolution Nr 65/03.11.2015.

Coordinator on behalf of the Heraclion Bar for Life Natura Themis is lawyer Dr Jorgos Sbokos.

The Bar’s members amount the number of 810 full occupied Lawyers as well as 50 trainee Lawyers. Τhe HB has 15 committees on various issues of social interest. Since 2009 the HB runs an Environmental Committee in order to prepare recommendations for the Board on environmental related issues.

The general scope of the Environmental Committee is summed up in activities as Intervention in the legislative procedure through the electronic platform of the Greek government annotation, Legal approach of crucial environmental questions coming up in the phase of governmental consultation, Jurisprudence auditing and capitalization of environmental information, Monitoring of environmental measures of local administrative authorities, Scientific collaboration with other institutions on Crete (Polytechnic University, Hellenic Center for Marine Biology, Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania, Natural History Museum of Crete etc) on legal advice and support matters, Informing the public and organizing scientific meetings, as well as the  Active pursuing enforcement of environmental liability through claiming environmental offences.

To fulfill the objectives set each management period, the HB organizes seminars for special and public audiences, issues the magazine "Rhadamanthus" with articles and studies related to environmental subjects, comments on decisions of the Supreme Court (Areopag), participates in drafting legislation though consultation procedures and transfers reports to the Prosecutor of the Supreme Court for the protection of the Environment if a case of environmental endangerment occurs.
