On Wednesday, 01.07.2020, a teleconference was held for educational use by the course "Introduction to Environmental Policy and Management" of the School of Environment at the University of Massachusetts on economics and environmental policy.
Invited speakers were the coordinating lawyer of the project Life Natura Themis on behalf of the Heraklion Bar Association, Dr. George Sbokos and Mrs. Francesca Leucci, lawyer and PhD candidate at the University of Bologna (EDLE).
During the hour-long discussion, following issues were addressed: the management of natural resources at European and international level, the trends in market selfregulation and national legislation, as well as the prospects for the new European Green Deal.
The coordinator of the Heraklion Bar Association referred to the Life Natura Themis project, the way it deals with environmental degradation in Crete and the role of criminal law in conserving natural resources.
Questions were answered about the content of sustainable development, the role of economics in environmental policy, the effectiveness of ecosystem services and the necessary changes in the political management of the environment.
The conference was organized and filmed by the former external partner of the Natural History Museum of Crete and current PhD candidate at the University of Massachusetts, Mrs. Konstantina (Tania) Ploumi, currently teaching "Introduction to Environmental Policy and Management" at the School for the Environment.
